Questions

What is Occupational Therapy?

Our "occupation" can be defined as how we occupy our time and bring meaning and purpose to our lives. It is typically associated with jobs adults perform, however it includes things people need to, want to, and are expected to d.

Occupational Therapy (OT) provides intervention to help regain function, maintain level of functioning, or make accommodations for any deficits being experienced.

OT can serve the entire population in a wide variety of physical and psychosocial areas when illness, injury, or disability prevents one from functioning effectively or independently in one or more "occupational" areas.

What does OT look like in a school setting?

The occupation of a child consists of academics, social interaction, and play - all of wich require a strong set of core foundational skills for children to be successful in their occupation.

The aim for school based therapy is to support and maximize educational participation in class.

OT can address or provide:

  • Focus and attention strategies

  • Sensory processing & sensory integration

  • Fine & gross motor skill development

  • Visual-perceptual skills

  • Handwriting

  • Activities of daily living

  • Self regulation/executive functioning

  • Referrals to other specialists

Why OnTrack Therapy Services?

OnTrack Therapy Services uses a child centered approach and is designed to be fun. We implement therapy that looks and feels like play to the child, while in actuality the therapist draws on knowledge and extensive training to provide challenging therapeutic activities.

These activities are aimed at developing greater capabilities and skills levels for the child. The therapy is not only designed to be fun, it IS fun and keeps the children motivated and engaged as they build confidence in themselves and gain success in their skills.

Erica Davied, OTR/L, specializes in sensory integration, which is key in helping the child reach their full developmental potential.

What is Sensory Integration?

Sensory integration is the organization of sensation for use.

Our senses give us information about the physical conditions of our body and the environment around us. Countless bits of sensory information enter our brain at every moment from all places in our bodies.

The brain must organize all these sensations if a person is to move, learn, and behave in a way that is effective. When sensation flows in a well organized or integrated manner, the brain can use those sensations to form perceptions, behaviors, and learning.

A sensory integration therapist is trained in the neurosciences and can diagnose how the child's sensory systems are working, then designs the environment by providing and controlling sensory input, thus enabling the child to interact more effectively.

The earlier this is addressed, the better! Young brains are flexible and capable of natural change. As the brain matures, some of this flexibility is lost.
